Who is Wulf Dorn: as a person and as an author?
Wow, you start with the most difficult question of all. (laughs) Who am I? Well, I guess my wife would say: A boy in a man’s body who loves to daydream in a quite dark way. I’m definitely a lucky fellow that there are people all over the world who like what I do. I’m very happy and grateful for that!
[Chi è Wulf Dorn, come persona e come autore?
Wow! Hai iniziato con la domanda più difficile di tutte. (Ride) Chi sono? Bene, credo che mia moglie direbbe: un ragazzo nel corpo di un uomo che ama sognare ad occhi aperti in un modo abbastanza oscuro. Sono decisamente un uomo fortunato perché ci sono persone da tutto il mondo a cui piace quello che faccio. Sono veramente felice e grato per questo!]
How was born the idea of your latest book, “Incubo”?
Originally I planned a different story about a boy who witnessed a murder and gets hunted by the killer. While I was working on that novel, it happened that I lost two of my loved ones within only a few months. I felt really down and the idea of that novel suddenly seemed trivial to me. So I took a break and thought about what really mattered to me at that time. Out came “Incubo”, a really dark story about life and loss.
[Com’è nata l’idea del tuo ultimo libro, “Incubo”?
Originariamente avevo pianificato una storia diversa su un ragazzo che ha assistito a un omicidio e viene inseguito dal killer. Mentre stavo lavorando su quel romanzo, è successo che ho perso due dei miei cari nel giro di pochi mesi. Mi sentivo davvero giù e l’idea di quel romanzo improvvisamente sembrava banale per me. Così ho preso una pausa e pensato a ciò che veramente contava per me in quel momento. È venuto fuori “Incubo”, una storia davvero oscura sulla vita e la perdita.]
Which of your books is your favorite one?
Oh, this is like you asked a father for his favorite child. (laughs) Seriously, I really can’t answer on this. Each of my books and stories means something special to me. They all are about certain subjects that kept me thinking at certain points in my life. Or, like a father would say: They all are my favorites.
[Quale, tra i tuoi libri, è il tuo preferito?
Oh, questo è come se avessi chiesto ad un padre quale sia il suo figlio prediletto. (Ride) Scherzi a parte, davvero non posso rispondere a questa domanda. Ognuno dei miei libri e delle mie storie significa qualcosa di speciale per me. Sono tutti su certi argomenti che mi hanno fatto pensare ad un certo punto della mia vita. Oppure, come direbbe un padre: sono tutti i miei preferiti.]
Which of your characters do you love most?
Same. Writing a novel usually takes me one year. That’s the time I spend with my characters at least, and I wouldn’t do so if I wouldn’t like them. Nor would a reader. So, all my characters have to become like real close friends to me. Even the villains … No, especially the villains. Each one has a very complex history and every time it takes me quite a while to discover why they behave the way they do. They help me to understand that there’s always a reason why people do bad things. This reason won’t be an excuse, of course. They choice between doing right or wrong is always up to ourselves.
[Quali dei tuoi personaggi ami di più?
Lo stesso. Scrivere un romanzo di solito mi prende un anno. Questo è il tempo che trascorro con i miei personaggi come minimo, e non vorrei farlo se non mi piacessero. Né lo vorrebbe un lettore. Quindi, tutti i miei personaggi devono diventare come veri e propri amici, vicini a me. Anche i cattivi… No, soprattutto i cattivi. Ognuno di essi ha una storia molto complessa e ogni volta, mi ci vuole un po ‘di tempo per scoprire il motivo per cui si comportano nel modo in cui si comportano. Mi aiutano a capire che c’è sempre un motivo per cui le persone fanno cose cattive. Questa ragione non sarà una scusa, naturalmente. La scelta tra bene o male è sempre una nostra decisione.]
Self-quote: is there a sentence in your books you feel most fond of?
There are a lot of sentences in my books which have a deeper meaning to me personally. In INCUBO it is “Niente dura per sempre. La sicurezza è un’illusione.”

Ci sono tante frasi nei mie libri che hanno un significato profondo per me personalmente. In INCUBO è: “Niente dura per sempre. La sicurezza è un’illusione.”]
What authors do you like to read in your free time?
There are a lot of writers I like to read. More than I can name. To pick out one, Stephen King has been one of my all time favorites since many years. I don’t like all of his books equally, but a lot of them are masterpieces. When I was twelve, his short story collection “Nightshift” motivated me to write my first stories. It was horror, of course – both, the stories and my writing. (laughs) At this time I never thought writing stories would have such an impact on my later life. Sometimes a book can literally change your life.
[Quali autori ti piace leggere nei tuo tempo libero?
Ci sono tanti autori che mi piace leggere. Molti di quanti possa elencare. Per sceglierne uno, Stephen King è uno dei miei favoriti da molti anni. Non mi piacciono tutti i suoi libri allo stesso modo, ma molti di loro sono capolavori. Quando avevo dodici anni, la sua raccolta di racconti “Nightshift” mi ha motivato a scrivere le mie prime storie. Era un horror, naturalmente – entrambi, le storie e la mia scrittura. (Ride) A quei tempi non avrei mai pensato che scrivere storie avrebbe avuto un così grosso impatto nella mia vita. Qualche volta, un libro può letteralmente cambiare la tua vita.]
Which of your books would you like to made into a movie?
Of course all of them! (laughs) Over the years there have been offers by filmmakers, but in the end it didn’t come to a film. Either because of the production costs or I had to decline because of bad screenplays. I mean, of course I would like to see my novels on the screen, but more than that I owe my readers a good adaption. However, currently there are negotiations about a movie with a producer I’d really like to work with. Let’s keep finger’s crossed!
[Da quale dei tuoi libri vorresti che fosse tratto un film?
Da tutti, ovviamente! (Ride) Nel corso degli anni ci sono state offerte da parte di registi, ma non sono mai arrivate al film. Sia a causa dei costi di produzione o perché ho declinato delle brutte sceneggiature. Voglio dire, sicuramente mi piacerebbe vedere le mie storie sullo schermo, ma più di questo, devo ai miei lettori un buon adattamento. Tuttavia, attualmente sono in atto negoziazioni su un film con un produttore con il quale mi piacerebbe veramente lavorare. Teniamo le dita incrociate!]
Now, choose cast members.
Well, for as long as there is no movie yet, I don’t want to spoil my readers’ imagination. When we are reading, everyone of us has his own picture of a character in mind. To me a written story always works best in the inner cinema – with the reader’s own favorite actors in mind.

Give us a tip: what’s the secret of being a great writer?
Read a lot. Write a lot. Love your work. And, most of all: Never think of yourself as a great writer, because vanity kills improvement. Keep in mind that there is always someone better you can learn from.
[Dacci un consiglio: qual è il segreto per essere un grande scrittore?
Leggi tanto. Scrivi tanto. Ama il tuo lavoro. E, soprattutto: non pensare mai a te come un grande scrittore perché la vanità uccide il miglioramento. tieni a mente che c’è sempre qualcuno di migliore da quale puoi imparare.]
Are you working about some new projects?
A couple of weeks ago I finished a new novel. Currently I’m editing the script. It will be published (in Germany) in autumn next year. In addition I’ve started a new project, another dark novel which is scheduled for publication in spring 2018. And there are some more plans for a third new novel. So, my dear constant readers will have to be patient. But you can be rest assured that I’ll do my very best that the long wait will be worth it.
[Stai lavorando su qualche nuovo progetto?
Un paio di settimane fa ho finito il mio nuovo libro. Attualmente, sto modificando il testo. Sarà pubblicato (in Germania) nell’autunno del prossimo anno. In più, ho iniziato un nuovo progetto, un’altra storia tenebrosa di cui è programmata la pubblicazione nella primavera del 2018. E c’è qualche altro piano per una terza storia. Quindi, miei cari, costanti lettori, dovrete avere pazienza. Ma potete essere sicuri che farò del mio meglio perché valga la pena di questa lunga attesa.]
